Esophageal cancer practice guidelines 2022 edited by the Japan Esophageal Society: part 2

The guidelines address endoscopic surveillance after definitive chemoradiotherapy, noting that intraesophageal recurrence occurs at high incidence even after complete response, necessitating endoscopy at 1 month post-response and every 2–3 months thereafter for 1 year. For surgical treatment of cervical esophageal carcinoma, larynx-preserving surgery is discussed, with a caveat that it carries increased risk of aspiration and pneumonia. Late toxicities affect approximately 10% of patients and may be fatal, underscoring the importance of regular follow-up.
