Researchers modified a corneal epithelium-on-a-chip to apply an air–liquid interface stimulus to human corneal epithelial cells, producing transcriptomic and metabolomic changes consistent with dry eye syndrome including increased inflammatory gene expression and secretion of damage-associated metabolites.
