This cross-sectional study characterized 50 S. aureus isolates from gastrointestinal clinical samples of patients with food poisoning at Mansoura University Hospital, Egypt. All isolates were confirmed as methicillin-resistant via mecA gene detection and cefoxitin resistance. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed 100% resistance to ampicillin and cefoxitin, with 86% of isolates classified as multidrug-resistant. The highest sensitivity was to vancomycin, linezolid, and quinolones. PCR analysis for staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) genes revealed set-A was most prevalent (56%), followed by set-G (32%), set-O (24%), and set-B (20%); set-C and set-M were less common (8% and 16%). Isolates carrying SE genes were used to validate a microarray chip for SE detection.
