This cohort study measured nuclear and mitochondrial cell-free DNA (cfDNA) fragments in plasma from colorectal cancer patients and healthy individuals. It found that total cfDNA levels increased with tumor stage, while mitochondrial cfDNA (MTCO3) fragments were significantly reduced, especially in early stages, suggesting potential for improved early diagnosis.
