Nineteen participants received sodium bicarbonate (0.4 g·kg⁻¹) plus 15 g carbohydrate in a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial and performed repeated 15-second Wingate anaerobic tests. Peak blood bicarbonate increased by 7.8±1.9 mmol·L⁻¹ at 75 minutes post-ingestion, but gastrointestinal side effects inversely interacted with performance indices, and no significant difference in performance was found between the sodium bicarbonate and placebo conditions.
