In a rat intrastromal inoculation model, Acanthamoeba harboring naturally acquired intracellular Pseudomonas aeruginosa caused severe acute keratitis with pronounced neutrophil infiltration, whereas Acanthamoeba alone induced only mild corneal disease. The intracellular P. aeruginosa also exhibited significantly greater survival and replication in human macrophages compared to a wild-type strain.
